My name is Wendi Marik, and I teach in East Bernard, Texas home of the Brahmas. I have the privilege of teaching one of the 4 kindergarten classes we have at EBES. Over the last 26 years of teaching, I have seen and engaged with some of the most respectful and brightest kiddos. This year is no different as my students are stretching me to find new ways to engage and challenge them. Let’s just say mediocre is not acceptable to them which causes me to always be on the lookout for innovative ways to teach and interact. While our town takes care of each other, there are some things that are out of our control . . . like a natural disaster.
Last year, Hurricane Harvey made a strong impact on our town.
While I personally experienced minimal property damage, I was able to see firsthand through family members and friends ALL of the water and the destruction. Neighbors pulled together in the most amazing ways to help out a fellow friend in need, but in many areas, it has drained any extra resources our community may have had.
My Project
At this time I am trying to integrate additional technology into my classroom. This technology will give me more flexibility in the way I teach and in the way my students are learning. I will use the Ipevo IW2 Wireless Interactive Whiteboard System to change my current style of teaching from an overhead projector while having the kids copy my work from their tables to having a more intimate engagement on the rug in front of me (hence the request also for a new classroom rug). By allowing this close interaction style, my students will be more in tuned. I can call them up to use this new technology to circle, highlight, etc. the work that we are completing together.
My classroom style will then move from being one dimensional with my just dictating work on the students to 3-dimensional as there is potential for my kiddos to teach each other.
In addition, my request for the iPads and Osmos is to create a new “Technology Learning Center.” At this time, I do not have a computer in my classroom, and my students only receive 30 minutes of computer time a week. We all know that these kids, in order to be successful in their future, will need to be comfortable with technology. This new learning center would allow my kiddos to do just that. In addition, the iPads with the Osmo devices would allow my kids to work on spatial awareness and creativity, all important aspects that cannot always be taught with pencil and paper.
Lastly and probably most importantly, these new technology devices would allow the kids to learn and have fun at the same time. The students will feel as if they are playing rather than being tested... a wonderful perk for me and my kiddos!
