A kindergarten student asked me, "Ms. Blake, can I play on the computers or the tablets at centers today?"
Before I can even answer, the student said, "Ms. Blake, where are the computers and tablets?"
I point to a table where technology should be, but it is empty! Then I see that sad little kindergarten face. We need help here!
My students are typical five and six year old children in a full day kindergarten class.
They attend a magnet school in a large urban district. At our school we encourage inquiry. We question how the world works and why. We encourage learning through choices that offer many options. We believe in making the world a better place one child at a time.
My Project
I have requested two iPad mini tablets, protective cases, and screen covers. My kindergarten students will use the tablets during literacy center time each day. The students will use apps to help them learn literacy skills such as letters, sounds, and sight words. This will allow the children extra and individual practice with skills they need to improve on and have fun while doing it!
We will also use the tablets as a resource for our units of inquiry. If we have a question about a topic, the tablets will come in handy to help us find the answer quickly. They may only be in kindergarten, but my students know what the Internet is and how to use it!
Our children are growing up in an age of technology.
As an educator, I am always being told to "add technology" to my classroom and curriculum. I can't do that if I don't have any!
Our young learners are missing out and it is very unfortunate and unfair. These tablets are a small step and a start in the right direction for bringing some current, relevant, and much needed technology to my classroom. The benefits for the children are too numerous to list, but they will love and use these tablets daily!
