What I love about first grade is that the student's growth is tremendous! What makes them special is their unique way of learning. I like to advocate for child-centered instruction and that means going above and beyond to get the resources they need to be successful. In our classroom, we are a family. My sweet students work hard each day to succeed in school, despite coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Our classroom community encourages a growth mindset. If you believe it, you can achieve it! Some of our daily activities include reading workshop (read to self, buddy read, listening station, free writing, and word study), math workshop (math tubs, computer games, partner problem solving, iPad fact fluency), social studies, science, and more! We love centers and small group instruction time.
My Project
Our classroom has outdated technology that rarely works. Having a Chromebook will allow my students to participate in centers such as math with technology, listen to reading, phonics instruction, etc. Some of our students do not have resources in their homes due to low socioeconomic status and recent events, such as hurricane Harvey. My students truly look forward to computer centers each and every day, but unfortunately they are often let down when they get there and it does not work properly. Having technology in all student's hands levels the playing field and gives each child a equal opportunity for growth with a modern learning tool.
