My students need tablets in the special education classroom, to support their specific disabilities in order for them to progress in the general education curriculum.
A vision without a task is but a dream. A task without a vision is drudgery. A vision and a task are the hope of the world. Special needs student need to access their futures through technology.
My students have a variety of disabilities from learning, to autism, hearing, physical, and anxiety disorders.
Each one comes with his or her own set of complex needs. The children range from kindergarten to sixth grade and I am the only teacher.
My Project
Clearly, a vast amount of curriculum is needed to teach and support each student with their individual education program. With the use of tablets, learning is engaging and not a drudgery. With thousands of free apps, all of my students could access reading, writing and math activities at their individual levels if they had tablets. Research is showing that children on the Autism spectrum retain better when they can use multi-sensory learning tools. To see, touch and hear helps input more path ways into the brain and develop better retention. My students will be drawn to the great graphics, and the immediate feedback and repeated practice will help them progress faster than ever before possible.
Obviously, special needs students will always have to work hard if they are to reach their life's dreams.
The task of reaching that dream in a positive and engaging way will best be accomplished with the use of technology in the classroom. Giving them tablets will plant the seeds for potential success. The only difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is extraordinary determination, and my students are determined. Help us reach outside our classroom to learn and explore.
