Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a self-contained 5th grade classroom. This year I have 29 curious students who love reading. They are a diverse group: GATE (gifted students), Hispanic, African-American, Filipino, Visually impaired, and with a variety of ability levels. They are kind and work well together and "fill buckets" in and out of the classroom. They understand that struggling is part of the learning process and that we only get smarter if we keep "making our brain sweat."
Every year my class rewrites a fairytale and then turns it into an iMovie.
This year I have them working in smaller groups, so that every student is engaged. So, of course, we don't have enough iPads for every group to work at the same time. Our class would really appreciate a new iPad so that we can continue to work on projects such as: stop motion animation iMovies, song writing with garage band. We also use the iPads to take AR quizzes, review math concepts on MobyMax or Khan Academy. More iPads would help our class run more smoothly.
My Project
Every year, my students get excited about rewriting fairytales and then turning them into movies. This project is so much more than creating a movie. During the process, students get to express themselves creatively, both in written format and when creating their backgrounds and characters. They learn to work well as a team, each taking on specific roles (i.e. director, screenwriter, cameraperson, and script supervisor). They also learn how to bring their ideas to life, using technology.
When I showed my class the work of previous students, they were inspired, but they were also excited about sharing their movies with next year's class (even before they had even begun creating their movies).
The iPads are crucial to this project, but they are also used daily for taking AR quizzes, working on math concepts, and doing research. Funding this project will turn my students into Technology Superstars!
