My students come from all over the world with many different levels of knowledge. When they enter my math class, I know that there will be lots of struggles because of their countless different learning backgrounds.
Giving students the ability to work on catching up through personalized learning will be invaluable.
Many of my students' families do not have the means to provide access to technology at home, preventing my students to have an equal playing field when it comes to technology know-how.
My Project
In my math classroom, I envision students working in learning stations throughout the classroom. Right now, this is just a dream of mine. Without access to technology, my students are limited to textbooks and paper.
Using only the same textbook with 30 students in a class does not enable me to personalize students' learning.
In these learning stations, students will be able to access the laptops which I will be able to customize with lessons and activities designed to the students' level. Stations will be based upon the areas they need to practice. Depending on the numbers of laptops that I will be able to have for the class, some stations will be without laptops, but will have teacher created lessons posted in the stations, textbooks, activity packets, or other activities such as explorations on paper. As some students will be working in these stations, others will go to the stations with laptops for a variety of in-class activities - watch videos and take down notes, work on practice skills on a consistent basis, visualization of big concepts. These stations will enable students to work at their pace and level and provide them catch-up activities. Having students work in learning stations with laptops will give slower learners the ability to meet their individual learning objectives towards math proficiency.
