This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach second grade in a Title 1 school in the Southwest of a large city in Pennsylvania. Our school struggles daily. All of my students are poverty stricken, receive free lunch, and struggle academically. Because of budget constraints, we receive no supplies, no money towards our classroom, etc.
Some of the students at my school are homeless, some of the students can't afford shoes; and the teachers, including myself, buy these students these things.
Our students could excel so much more with the resources they need/deserve!
My Project
Many of my second grade students are significantly behind their peers in both Reading and Math. We have on-line intervention programs and apps that will help them to close the achievement gap, but not enough technology for them to use these interventions.
My second graders are low income, inner city students.
Many live with a single parent, in foster homes or in temporary shelters. The class size is large and the needs of the children are many. About 80% of students are currently reading below grade level. We try to build up our students background knowledge with computer based programs to meet their needs.
