In my English Language Arts classes, my students know that we are a family that works together towards positivity and success. Even though reading and writing are a struggle, we keep our heads up and try new techniques to improve these skills.
All of my middle school students have special needs.
Each one is unique, but they all are working to overcome their deficits in reading and writing. My fifth through eighth graders benefit most from engaging lessons that address their multiple learning styles. Because I am their special education ELA teacher, by the time they reach eighth grade, I have taught them for three or four years, allowing a special bond to be created.
My Project
On a daily basis, the Chromebooks would play an integral role in our classroom in a variety of ways. One way that the students will use them is by listening and reading along to audiobooks to increase their reading comprehension skills. Students will also assess their comprehension by completing Accelerated Reader quizzes on the computers. Another way students will use the technology is by using the text-to-speech features. This will allow students who have severe phonetic and spelling deficiencies to complete their work in a more efficient manner. Remediation and progress monitoring are an important part of a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The Chromebooks would give my students more opportunities to participate in on-line remedial and assessment programs. Finally, my students would use the computers to enhance our lessons in ways such as conducting research, analyzing videos, or creating presentations.
Even though reading and writing are obstacles for my students, technology is something they are comfortable using and enjoy.
The technology will help us meet their individual needs and encourage a love for learning. By adding three computers to our classroom, you will be opening doors for students with disabilities to succeed.
