Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As my diverse and dynamic group of students enter the classroom each day, they touch a sign on our door that reads: "This is a safe space. No matter what happens outside, in this room I know that I am safe, respected, and valued. I am listened to, cared about, and believed in. No matter what."
This message is incredibly important for my 4th grade students, many of whom are immigrants and speak a language other than English at home.
They are often prejudged as a result of these factors.
Our Title I school and community-centered classroom provide all students with a space where they can be proud of who they are and where they can reflect on their identities and how society sees them. My students are passionate about identifying problems occurring in our community and implementing innovative solutions to those problems.
My Project
"WHAT?!" My students gasped in shock from the truth that they just discovered. As we were reading "Riding Freedom" by Pam Muñoz Ryan, these fourth grade students were appalled by the sexism that the main character faced. After, naturally, I led them to the question of how sexism plays a role in today's society, these wonderful humans demanded that we act to promote gender equality in our school and community. With hardly a word from me, they set to work making posters of influential women in history, writing scripts for plays showing what to do when you encounter sexism in school, and writing comic books to show the effects of sexism in society.
With access to technology, this drive to action by my students would be better supported - providing more and better ways for them to show what they have learned and act on the issues we discuss in class.
Tablets in our classroom will engage my students in the learning by promoting creativity and variety in how students complete their work and show their mastery. Tablets will enhance the learning in our classroom by allowing students to go deeper with their learning through research and critical source selection. Tablets will extend my students' learning by empowering them to complete work with a purpose - work that will be seen by a larger audience, that will make a larger impact, and that is relevant in the students' lives.
