Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember knowing someone who struggled in school? My class is the "opportunity class". It is designed as an inclusive classroom to provide academic support to struggling students. Each day students arrive and begin the morning with a daily poem that builds a personal connection to them.
My students are children that have struggled academically and behaviorally since elementary.
By the time they reach middle school, they are unable to handle switching from class to class or keep up with the rigor or pace of the curriculum. My students are in need of intensive literacy skills/strategy support. I take their grade level Common Core standards and break them into digestible bites along with providing them reading materials that are at their level, while continually providing support to build their reading levels. My school is located in a low income area that services a multicultural population. Many of the students are English language learners. Due to the new CCSS standards funds have become tight due to the need to adopt and purchase new standards based books across the grades.
My Project
Our current desktop computers in the classroom are considered dinosaurs. They take too long to start and on a daily basis have technological issues. This impedes our ability to do research, practice typing skills, do writing assignments and take assessments. This has a negative effect on the goal of this class, which is to bring students up to grade level and teach them the skills to be successful independent learners in middle school. The new CCSS standards requires students to be proficient using technology as all testing is done online. This means students need to be able to read, annotate notes, and type fluently on a computer. New computers will allow me to teach students how to read and annotate notes for research efficiently. It will also allow me to teach students how to become fluent typists as they will be able to practice typing skills along with becoming efficient on programs that they can publish work on.
This donation will improve my students' attitude about themselves.
They will see that people do care about their academic success. It will also allow them to use technology on a daily basis. They will be able create presentations on Word and Power Point. They will have the ability to read articles, books, and research on the Internet, causing an intrinsic motivation to learn. Students will view computers as a learning device and not just a social media outlet as well.
