My students are amazing, they are capable, they are bright, they are funny, they are talented and they need lots of love.
I teach in a counseling enriched special day class, which is Special Ed here in Oakland.
All of my students have a background of trauma and they all deal with emotional disturbances that impact their ability to learn and interact with others. Many of my students have difficulty just getting to school and many come hungry.
Although I serve 6-8th graders, the typical student in my classroom reads between the third and the fifth-grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. 91% come from low-income families and it has been reported that test scores for low-income students at my school fall far below the state average for all students.
Although I was previously told there would be a small amount available for reimbursement, I am now told there is no budget for SpEd this year. I have been lucky enough to inherit some classroom materials, but I am in need of much more in order to provide top-quality education across all content areas.
My Project
Currently, our middle school is required to share several laptop carts among classrooms, which means that oftentimes, my students do not have access to technology when they need it. Our school laptops are well-loved: many are broken and missing keys, so there's no guarantee the ones we borrow will come to us in working condition.
Most of my students do not have access to technology at home and I believe it is a right for them to have it at school.
Technology's integration into nearly all aspects of education has made Internet connectivity, whether at home or school, essential for kids. Any student without access inevitably falls behind.
My one wish for my students is that they find success in life, whatever that means for them. Please consider donating to this project to help me provide my amazing students with technology to better themselves and better their future.
