My first graders' enthusiasm for school and life are infectious. Teaching them is an exciting and rewarding experience. My first graders are brimming with curiosity and excitement for learning, life, friends and interests. At this age there is tremendous growth, lose of teeth, great emotional highs, and less frequently, some emotional lows. As they learn social skills in a classroom setting, my first graders are learning to become lifelong readers. Our class is working hard towards building a strong reading foundation that will support successful academic growth for the rest of their educational years. What better way than to do so through fostering a love for reading!
We live in a very small school district and have just over 200 students at our K-6th grade school.
Although the surrounding areas are growing rapidly, the school itself is among a small farm town community. Our school supports learning through discovery and has started an engaging STEAM program. I enjoy watching students jump into these projects with both feet as they work fiercely. They don't want to miss out on a thing. Lots of energy and innovation is needed when keeping up with 26 eager to learn first graders!
My Project
Teaching technology skills is essential in educating first graders and enabling them to become successful in the 21st century. Most of my students are lacking experience with technological devices. My goal is to provide my first graders with the ability to experience reading practice with the use of iPads. My initial plan is to use these devices for the many engaging apps that support sight-word recognition, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary recognition and word meaning.
My project targets key areas of reading but also aims to incorporate digital age skills into teaching strategies and lesson plans.
The ultimate goal is to offer meaningful opportunities to my young learners as they began their journey toward digital age readiness.
