My students need two laptop computers to access online websites to create videos and other online projects in class. Each laptop will be used for various projects.
A typical day in my classroom includes hands-on activities or outside learning activities. I love to incorporate videos and the online digital lessons our online book provides. My motto is that science should be fun while learning and the best way is through exploration and experiments!
I work at a charter school that is located on campus of the Boys and Girls Home.
The Boys and Girls Home serves children who are in need of a long-term placement, usually at least one school year or longer, due to family dysfunctions, parental incapacity or unmanageable behavioral problems in the home. Many of our students have experienced physical and verbal abuse, neglect and even sexual abuse.
Unfortunately, the majority of my students that come from this situation or below, at least, one grade level and usually below more than one. In order to help my students improve their reading skills and love for science we need resources. Although we are considered a charter school, we do not receive enough funding because we are considered a public school. Although most of my students experience extreme hardships, they are resilient, resourceful, and ready to learn. They do not use their adversity as a crutch and they do not allow this to get in the way of trying to make their future better.
My Project
Our school understands that technology is the key for our students success but we just don't have the funding for every classroom to receive technology. This school does not have a computer lab and has a very limited amount of usable laptops.
Fortunately my classes are small and will allow me more one on one time to help my students succeed.
If I have a laptop station, I will be able to allow my students to create online projects and activities as part of their schoolwork. Students will be able to access websites, such as, Glogster.com, Google Docs, Brainpop, NASA, and Schoology just to name a few. I have a million ideas to incorporate technology; I just don't have the resources.
The computer will also allow my students to interact with the smartboard in my classroom while I am working with another group. The more my students use technology, the more prepared they will be for brighter futures and overcoming their adversity.
I teach children who are overcoming extreme neglect or physical abuse and just need the resources to succeed.
We all know that in order to succeed in today's society, you need hands-on experience with technology. A laptop station in the classroom can help them get that experience. I want to give every opportunity my students need to succeed in life and this will help them get one step closer.
