I am lucky to teach 25 amazing first graders who love to learn and explore. Our world is becoming technology-driven these days, yet many of the students in my classroom have minimal exposure to new technologies as many do not have computers or the Internet in their homes. They all come from different backgrounds, so our class is full of diversity. Each student has their own individual learning style. We are a Title I school, and we have many at-risk students. Our school is preschool to 5th grade, with about 700 students.
I would love to introduce Kindles to my students to allow them to expand their learning.
This is my first year teaching, and I have limited supplies in my classroom. We have 4 computers for the entire class. We are fortunate to have a Smartboard in the class. My students take turns practicing math and reading skills on it in a whole group setting; however, since there are 25 students, not everyone gets a turn. The Kindles will help them increase their reading levels and develop the foundation skills they need to be successful!
My Project
The Kindles, with headphones and protective cases, will be extremely helpful in the classroom. My first graders will use them in many ways. First, activating their Reading A-Z accounts on the Kindles during center time will allow them to choose books geared toward their interests and reading levels. There are many apps available that will allow students to practice their sight words and phonics skills. They can also be used in math centers, where they will practice addition, subtraction, graphing, and other important first grade math skills! The students will use them in science to watch different lab experiments that apply to our weekly units.
These Kindles will also be used as a motivational tool for special education students.
It will help them keep their focus and serve as a reward when they are displaying good behavior. We can use the Kindles to improve reading and language arts skills, as well as create a strong foundation in math skills. These kindles will expose my students to technologies they have never seen before. This will better prepare them for their future.
