Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in first grade begins with morning meeting. This is a time to greet our classroom family, share stories, sing songs and prepare for our day. Throughout the day, our students participate in Reader's and Writer's Workshop, Math, Social Studies/Science and Hebrew.
Lashon Academy is a charter school in Van Nuys, California.
We have just completed a very successful first year, due to our amazing administration, teachers, staff and supportive families. Lashon has a Hebrew immersion program, which exposes our students to the Hebrew language and Israeli culture. Many of our students are learning English as a second language. In addition, a portion of our students are learning Hebrew as a third language! The positive, welcoming and comfortable environment of our school makes it a wonderful place our students love and cherish.
My Project
Centers allow students to explore on their own and provide many opportunities to address a wide variety of learning skills. In addition, students grow in their social and communication skills, helping and teaching one another. I would like to add a technology center in my classroom this year, as many of our students do not have access to technology at home. I would like to expose my students to more technology throughout the school day as it will motivate them to learn and build literacy/math skills.
The tablets that I plan to use are perfect tools for students to build comprehension by reading stories online, practice phonemic awareness, and play math games to build math fluency. The tablets would also be valuable tools in a listening center, for students to listen and read along to stories, poems and/or songs. It is important for students to be exposed to these tools, as technology is such an important part of all our daily lives.
Adding a technology center to my classroom will provide students with tools that they most likely do not have at home.
As the use of technology grows in our daily lives, it is important to expose children to this at an early age. The use of a technology center will support various learning styles and motivate the students to build their comprehension, fluency, phonemic awareness and math skills. It will support listening skills. The uses for a technology center in the classroom are endless!
