Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How important is technology? Many of the students in my class do not have technology at home, and are limited to only a few working computers in the classroom. By giving students access to these tablets, they will have the opportunity to enhance learning and gain skills they need to be successful.
My students are in second grade and range in age from 7 to 9 years old.
I have a very diverse class, and most of my kids are ELL students, which means they speak English as their second language. I have 15 students in my class, 7 boys and 8 girls. We are a Renaissance School, and 97% of the kids are on free lunch. It is a neighborhood school so most kids live close and walk to school.
The students in my class are curious learners who are eager to discover new things. Throughout the day, we ask questions and wonder about things that interest us. Often our lessons lead to researching about different things. We read as much as possible, and relate what we read to our own lives. Many of the students come in below level and it is my goal to bridge those gaps any way I can. It is very important for me to encourage and engage my students as much as possible to get them ready to be successful in life.
My Project
My students need 2 Samsung Galaxy tablets and 1 Google Nexus tablet. My students will use these tablets in many different ways. First, students will use them during reading centers. There are many reading programs that will read to students or give them access to many different book and magazines to read themselves. There are also programs to help ELL students with their English and vocabulary that they are lacking. In science and social studies, we do many projects that involve research. Students can use the tablets to research, use encyclopedias, and find photos. There are also many math apps that can be used to practice and reinforce concepts learned in class. Most importantly, technology is a huge motivator to all students. It keeps them engaged in what is being learned, and because of the lack of availability to them, it seems like a treat. Luckily, it is a treat that will teach them skills they need to know for their future.
Many of the students in my class do not have access to computers at home.
In this day and age, it is so important to be able to use technology. These tablets will allow the students to learn in different ways that are both beneficial and exciting to them. It will give them skills they will need in their future for school and possible careers. There are so many possibilities for these tablets and they will make a huge difference in my students' education.
