Technology in the Classroom: Making a Real Difference

My Students

Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." My students understand the need for change. My classroom is in a treatment facility for students who have made bad choices and mistakes. They know that unless they make some serious changes, their futures aren't bright. And they are ready to make those changes.

Although education is the focus in our class, my students are working hard to learn self control and decision making along with their academic subjects.

The majority of them started their lives with people who couldn't teach these skills and often couldn't provide for their basic needs. They learned many things in their homes and communities before coming to us, but very little of it is positive.

The materials I have requested will allow my students to see possibilities they didn't think they had and hopefully lead them to believe in a future that is more than they ever believed possible.

My Project

The Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings is sponsoring a year long initiative called "Spark. Grow. Unite." The monthly activities are designed to give students the chance to express themselves through writing, art and music. They explore, robotics, engineering, and literature and have the chance to share their ideas and creations with others.

One of those activities involves computer programming.

With the Spheros and tablets my students will be able to explore the world of coding in a real, hands on way. They will begin programming the robots to run races and have battles and will progress to writing computer programs and seeing their own ideas come to life.

The pens will allow my artistic students to express themselves through their drawing and watch it become a tangible object. They will be used for hands on learning in math and language arts will all learners but will be particularly helpful for those who need hands on objects in order to learn.
