Ignacio Estrada said, "If children are not learning the way we teach, let us teach them the way they learn." As a special education teacher I find myself constantly looking for and researching new approaches to teaching in order to find the teaching style that will help my students be successful.
My students are amazing individuals that present with their own unique profile.
As students on the Autism spectrum, the children in my classroom show up each day with some very real challenges. I have students with a wide range of abilities, but each one also has a variety of needs. Whether those needs are academic or behavioral depends on the individual student. I have students that spend their entire day in my classroom because the need of services is significant. I have other students that I see only one period a day. My goal is to provide my students with the skills they need to be successful both in the classroom and in their everyday lives.
My Project
I am asking for an iPad to use with the students in my classroom. Using this technology with children on the Autism spectrum is a fairly new educational development. When looking at the research done so far, and with the experiences I've had with students who have had access to the many apps specifically designed for children on the spectrum, there is no denying its success. There are a multitude of social skills apps that help build communication skill and friendship skills, both of which are the most significant challenges my students face. It allows them to interact with the world in a way in which previously they may not have been able to. There are also many reading, writing, and math apps that would motivate my students to move forward in areas that they struggle with. An iPad would also assist with data collection regarding student behavior as well as the positive behavior support plans that allow my students to be successful throughout the school environment.
I work with amazing children.
This technology and these resources provide my students with opportunities to learn and work together. The apps available to address a variety of needs my students face is remarkable. In a world that is ever moving towards technology, my students benefit greatly by being able to utilize the ever growing resources created. There are many apps that are designed specifically for children on the spectrum and with your help we can make those resources available. Thanks.
