This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My middle schoolers are creative, resilient and constantly intrigued. They come in every day with an open mind and are eager to try new activities and engage with their texts.
Serving students from a historically disenfranchised community comes with a unique set of challenges as well as opportunities.
With the lasting impacts of redlining, the community in which my students live does not offer many essential resources and lacks economic opportunity. Despite these challenges, it is home. The holistic community that has been built by my students and families brings joy, passion, justice, and love every day. My students are constantly grateful for their education and work hard every day to expand their learning.
Creativity and curiosity fuel my students' love of learning. You can constantly find them engaged in fruitful discussions about what they are learning inside and outside the classroom. My students' identities are their strengths and as their teacher, I will work to ensure they have the tools and opportunities to realize those strengths.
My Project
COVID-19 is uncovering the harsh realities and inequalities in our education system today. At my school, we do not have a 1 to 1 ratio of students to computers. Thus, students did not automatically have the tools they needed to be successful for distance learning.
When distributing Chromebooks to students for "Distance Learning", I realized that many of our computers were falling apart, outdated, or missing keys from years of use.
My students deserve better.
This project will help increase the number of Chromebooks at our school to meet the needs of our scholars. With a worldwide shift to technology education, computers are necessary for students' academic success. With eight weeks of online learning ahead of us, the life of many of our computers will end, and we will need more to ensure future success in the classroom.
