Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
College begins in Kindergarten and our students need to be able to function in a world that is surrounded by technology, one of the most influential tools available to students and educators.
I teach a group of 25 kindergarten students who are compassionate, caring, hard working and eager to learn.
They live in a low income community in the heart of San Fernando Valley in California. My students face many hardships at home and do not have access to a computer. All of my students are second language learners and because their parents speak little to no English, they are struggling to access the very demanding kindergarten curriculum. My students needs are very diverse. While some are still working on learning the letters of the alphabet, others are now learning to blend sounds to form words. In the area of math, some students are working on learning the numbers while others are already learning to add and subtract. Even though all my students are working at different levels, they are all eager to learn.
My Project
My students are growing up in a world filled with technology such as smart phones, iPods, flat screens, and video game systems. Technology is engaging to these curious learners and we need to take advantage of the endless possibilities that technology can provide. The Toshiba tablet that I am requesting will allow me to offer my students a very much needed differentiated instruction. Using the technology component that our math and reading programs have, I will be able to assign lessons and activities to the students according to their ability and exposing them to a new item in technology.
The Toshiba tablet will allow my students to work independently in areas where they need additional support.
We used to think that technology was a luxury, but today it is a necessity for our young learners, our future college students. The Toshiba tablet will help my Kindergarten students access the curriculum while preparing them to function in a world where technology is ever present.
