Have you ever been to a place where you didn't know how to speak the language? My Spanish immersion kindergarten students come to school each day and must learn the regular kindergarten curriculum in a complete foreign language for them - Spanish!
My students are fun, energetic 5 and 6 year-olds!
They have a zest for life and learning! Most come from English-speaking families who have decided to enrich their children by enrolling them in our district's Spanish immersion program. My students come from a number of cities as our public elementary school is located in a rural town that is close to a suburban city. Many of my students come from low-income families.
My Project
I am so excited at the possibility of including iPod touches in our classroom. I have found a number of wonderful apps in Spanish that will help develop my students' math skills, reading skills, and vocabulary! Because my students' native language is not Spanish, many have a low Spanish vocabulary. By using iPod touches, my students will be able to learn and practice new Spanish vocabulary in fun and engaging ways. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to use iPod technology outside of school as they come from low-income families just trying to get by. These students would benefit from learning how to use the iPod technology as well as the wonderful Spanish apps they will be using.
My district doesn't have the resources to provide students with new technology as many other districts do.
This project will allow my students the opportunity to learn about new technology while working on their ever-developing Spanish skills. My struggling students will especially benefit by using apps that allow them to continue practicing skills they are struggling with. These iPods will be an exciting and very beneficial addition to my classroom!
