My students are energetic, creative and full of life. For most of them, kindergarten is their first experience in a school setting. They enter the classroom ready to learn, explore and discover.
I teach at a Title I school so many of my students come from low-income households.
They may not have all the resources that some students have, but they don't let that stop them! In my classroom, you will find tomorrow's brightest doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers and whatever else they dream of becoming.
Trust me when I say, it is one of the greatest joys to be a part of their success. If you could only see how they beam with joy as they proudly learn to identify letters and begin to write.
My Project
My class is very fortunate to have 4 computers and 13 iPads. Our school has purchased subscriptions to two amazing literacy apps that personalize the learning to each student. There are just two problems. First, the headphone situation is a nightmare. We purchased a cheap set last year that all broke within 4 months. The headphones would pinch them or tangle their hair when they tried to adjust them. One of the apps gives a lot of verbal instructions. The students would get very frustrated when they couldn't figure out what to do because they couldn't hear the directions. My students need sturdy headphones that don't break easily.
The second problem is that the login for one of the apps is very difficult for a kindergartner to type.
Most of my kids come into kindergarten without knowing any of their letters. Hunting and pecking for the login information on the keyboard is not developmentally appropriate. We are trying to get them on this literacy app for 15 minutes a day. The time completely disappears when they spend 10 minutes logging in. This year, the app has a new feature where they can login by scanning a QR code. Purchasing the QR scanners for the computers will make logging in so much easier. They will be able to use the full time for learning.
