Mrs. Young-Brown from Bronx NY is requesting computers & tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need this computer in the classroom. It will help my low performing students with language arts as they began to learn new words and build vocabulary and begin to read with fluency.

The students I teach are remarkable they are African American and Mexican descent. They are immigrants and English is their second language. They have difficulty reading and writing. They come to school and most of them can't even afford a notebook and pencil. Most of them qualify for the after school tutoring program, but are so far below grade level. It is difficult for them to catch up. Their parents can't help because most of them speak no English themselves. The neighbor is poor and the school is their safe haven. It keeps them off the streets and out of trouble. It gives them a safe place to come stay warm and gain knowledge.
These materials will really impact my students' learning. I have a lot of low performing students. The computer and headphones will help them practice reading short stories, learn new words and build their vocabulary so that they can begin to read with fluency and understanding. It will also help them to practice their math skills, since they are struggling with place value, word problems and Base Ten at this time. They will be able to work independently and correct and track their own progress. I am teaching my students to be aware of how to read their own data and track their success. Computers will ultimately improve their academics.
