I currently teach 6th and 8th grade Special Education at Denham Springs Junior High. Our school is located in Louisiana in the hurricane affected area and we currently teach displaced students at our facility. Most of all my students learn by seeing, doing, and experiencing. The problem we run into in my classroom is that we all have to gather around one computer to do technology related activites. To meet the grade level expectations set forth by the state of Louisiana we must include technology in our lessons. I always find interesting videos and web sites that go with our activites, but no access to extra computers. I would like a computer projector to increase the intensity of all lessons. They need to be exposed to all these technological advances and I can't expose them properly if I don't have the technology. The unit I intend to work on with my students and the technology would benefit is know as a unit called "Making the Job". It teaches students to become their own entreprenuers. In special education the main problem we face is that our students will not attend college. They need the resources to go out, learn a trade, and perhaps begin their own business. Students will benefit from a projector by:
-Researching current career opportunites on-line
-The ability to present power point presentaions on the business they have chosen
-Introduction to a variety of information per United Streaming
-View examples of resumes so that they can prepare their own
-View examples of business plans to complete their own on their plans
-Examples of marketing their own goods/service
The possibilities are endless as to how beneficial the projector would be. My kids always look forward to this unit, because if gives them another option to attending college. Not that I discourage my students from attending college, but some of them have the ability to build their own successful businesses and it makes me feel good that I provided them with the information to do so. Any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated by myself and my students.
