Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Johnny Cash was quoted as saying, "The more I learn, the more excited I get." One thing is for certain, my K-3 Resource students in Hollywood have true excitement for life and learning. Using technology to tap into their excitement will help build a strong foundation for them.
In our urban neighborhood near many Hollywood landmarks, our student population is very diverse.
Students come to school with different backgrounds, and different experiences. They have different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), and varied interests. Motivation and excitement go hand in hand with discipline and perseverance to tasks, as we move through critical thinking lessons each day. Whether solving advanced word problems with illustrations or working math fluency drills to gain speed with numbers, K-3 Resource students in Hollywood love experiencing the excitement of learning. I see it on a daily basis. They read fiction and non-fiction alike, and master complex grammar, comprehension, and writing goals. We ask and answer difficult questions about the world around us. The gains we make in a year can be off the charts.
My Project
By splitting into small groups, Resource students can practice academic fluency games and chart their progress for added motivation. Using an iPad mini with headphones will allow students to use on-line reading and math programs. They can practice math skills such as models of 10, building numbers to 10,000, and step-by-step addition/subtraction/multiplication with regrouping. For Language Arts, students can experience reading passages and answering complex questions, using tech support. Using tech devices can often add that extra piece of excitement and motivation, which draw our young learners in, again and again.
We all know our world is opened with Math and Language.
For my Hollywood students, gaining fluency practice in both Math and Language Arts will aid in our pursuit towards critical thinking standards.
