My students are in our school because of safe school violations. I teach US History, Geography, Government to Youth in Custody, PE. My students need a positive school experience, and technology would give them that experience. It would also help them master the subjects taught through various apps.
We are a continuation Junior High for students with safe school violations.
We do not get much money from the district because of our ADA. This is needed! We need to reconnect them to the school system, teach proper behavior, and still teach them mastery of the subjects that they need to learn. Our students are good kids who have at one time or another, have made a mistake. They need a good experience in classes, so that they have a positive attitude about returning to their schools, and are equipped with the proper mastery of the subjects so that they can return to their schools with the confidence that they can be successful in school. We have three teachers in the school, and all are applying for iPads so that we can all be equipped with the same technology, so that the students will have the same technical experience throughout the day. Also, this will allow us teachers to be able to communicate with each other which students need extra guidance in real time.
My Project
I envision getting the apps that will allow my students to connect to the classroom computer and edit documents, maps, highlight primary source maps, and other resources. They will be able to access educational games and resources to help them review, relearn and gain mastery of the information. They will be able to write plays and presentations, record them, and share with the school and students. Learning will be fun, and educational for the students! They will be able to spend time productively learning during times when they would otherwise be doing a worksheet, coloring a map, or another exercise that would be meant to keep them busy. The reward for doing their work on time, and at a level of mastery would be something engaging, rather than a boring activity. We as teachers will also be able to stay connected and know to give certain students extra attention when needed. These students need this technology!
This project will add a needed extra level of hands on learning that they do not have access to.
It will add a level of excitement of learning, and will move our classroom one step further from textbooks, lecture, and pen and paper learning. It will give them the skills to function when they return to their schools, which are better funded, and put them on a level playing field with the other students. It will increase mastery, and they will have fun doing it!
