Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school's mission is to foster life-long learning in a safe, collaborative environment that nurtures all ability levels and learning styles. In order for that to be possible, reading and literacy need to be at the base of every student's education.
Unfortunately for a large part of our 1,100 student population, English is not their first or only language.
Out of 1,100 students, 93% are of Hispanic decent; of those children, 24% have limited English proficiency, which is much higher than the median across other Elementary schools in Arizona.
I am a dedicated teacher, mentor, supporter, and admiring fan of my 21 third graders. My students have such a strong love for learning in all subject areas. They are the most passionate, dedicated, and hard-working children I have had the pleasure of teaching. My passion is to make sure that every one of my students have equal opportunity to be successful in their education. My goal for each and every one of my students is to provide them with academic-rich learning opportunities in which they can feel confident and successful in their education and acquire a life-long love of learning.
My Project
During this time of uncertainty, my students were forced to quickly adapt to learning from home. Unfortunately, this requires a form of technology that more than half of my students do not have access to.
As a teacher, I want to provide my students with the best educational opportunities possible.
As the transition from learning in a classroom setting daily, to "school at home" has begun, the majority of my students are not able to completely engage in the online learning. I teach in a low income community, resulting in little to no availability in technology to my students and their families. This prevents them from not only enhancing their learning, but also being able to completely participate through the online learning resources.
I would love more than anything to be in my classroom, with my students, teaching them a lesson in person, walking around and helping them as they work. Unfortunately, at this time, I do not have the privilege of doing that. My students want so badly to be back in school with their friends, their teacher, and simply just the safety and security that my classroom and our school provides for them.
Many of the students in my classroom depend on school not only for their education, but for happiness, food, safety, and love. Having these Chromebooks would allow my students to access all the learning portals and resources that are required to continue on with the necessary teaching and learning. It will allow me to have "Morning Meetings" with my students where we can all see and talk to one another virtually through video calls. If my students were able to have these devices in their hands, it would make for better communication, stability, and accessibility in regards to their education for them during this time.
