Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math is a subject students either love or hate. My goal is to build relationships with my students and then get them to slowly realize that we are all in this together.
The relationships we forge with our students will help determine how successful they can be.
All people have strengths and weaknesses. My kids are from an urban area where a lot of their time away from school is spent at home socializing via social media. Students just need to realize we are all here to learn and improve together, and to understand that there is so much more to this world. Establishing relationships with my students and helping them reach their full potential is what I strive to do every day.
My Project
Students are on devices for hours a day. There are times they are using them for school use and there are times when they are using them for personal reasons. Many times, I ask my students what their plans are for the weekend and they respond with, "I am just staying home and talking to my friends." By talking, they mean texting or other social media outlets which are used for them to communicate. One of my goals this year is to build deeper relationships with my students and to help them build social skills without having to always rely on technology.
Donations to this project will allow my students to express themselves through playing games with others, putting their imaginations to work on paper or by simply sitting and talking.
For this project, I am requesting games, art supplies and storage containers to use with students to help build relationships. This year, I will be opening my room to students who just need a place before school, after school and during lunch. The goal of this project is to encourage students to socialize with others, through playing popular games, without the need for phones or tablets. When students get comfortable with this, I hope to introduce more challenging games that will help students problem solve, persevere and grow together. Students will also be able to express themselves through the use of the art supplies. I will be dedicating one wall of my classroom to students. They will be able to share things they are proud of. It could be work, art they create in my room using materials from this project, work from other classes or whatever they decide. The containers will be used for organization of the materials during the school day.
