My students are from the inner-city in California and do not have as much access to technology as your average high school student.
Their families cannot afford to buy them the technology that they should have and be exposed to particularly for those students who are college bound.
My Project
First of all I am requesting a large pack of AAA batteries. We currently have a class set of graphing calculators but with budget cuts, our school does not have the funding for replacement batteries, we would like to continue using the calculators throughout the year. We could really use the batteries for when the current ones run out. The students really are not familiar with more scientific calculators and when they get to exams like PSAT/SATs and ACTs they lack the skills to use the calculators efficiently and maximize them on exams. It would be great to continue exposing them to the technology and making them comfortable with their use. Requested is also a presentation remote both for myself as well as the students. As the teacher it would be really useful to circulate around the classroom and not have to run back to the computer to move the presentation along. Also occasionally students will do presentations in class that I would like them to use the remote for.
Technology has increasingly become a more important part of our daily lives and students need to be exposed to the technology that their peers at higher income levels and other neighborhoods are exposed to.
Our goal is for our students to go to college and they should go to college being comfortable with technology that can be used in the math classroom.
