My students need laptops and iPads for the classroom so they can practice their basic math facts on various online programs and apps. They also need these items to practice other math related life skills.
Students who walk through the classroom door each day feel excited to be in this classroom! They don't ever feel like they do not belong, they feel smart (and they are too!), and they never feel anxious or nervous about their school work. That is because I teach a small special education class with a total of 10 students this year. All learners in the classroom are on an Individualized Education Plan. With their special needs, they often do not perform at their current grade level. Most are on a second grade level or lower. On top of their special needs, the area in which they live is a low income area. 100% of my students receive free school lunch.
I always want my students to feel that they can succeed and be confident in their abilities.
I always strive for the curriculum and instruction to be accessible for all the students in my classroom. Some of their home lives are tough, going to school and learning shouldn't be a struggle. They need to feel a sense of pride when they walk through these doors each day!
My Project
Giving the students to have access to laptops and iPads will allow them to practice their basic math skills and help them become fluent in these skills. They will also get to practice math related life skills, such as counting money and change and telling time. These are important skills for my students to learn and retain so that they can use them in the real world.
Allowing the students to have access to this technology will help prepare them for their futures.
Most of my students have said that they do not think they will go on to college when they graduate high school. I need to help prepare them for the real world and allow them to practice the needed skills they will need for these types of jobs.
