My Students

"I'm bored." These words come easily to a middle school student. However, as a science teacher of seventh-grade students, my goal is to engage and inspire learning every day. My students are creative, bright, curious, and precocious. Each one has unique strengths in various areas such as the arts, mathematics, or logic. While not all are scientifically gifted, I strive to help each student reach his best through active and varied experiences.

Our racially diverse school has a high number of students who are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, and whose intellects range from academically gifted and talented to academically challenged.

Despite the obstacles many of my students face, they thrive to excel academically. My students work hard and deserve every opportunity to experience new activities.

My Project

Science education has shifted towards inquiry-based learning and a deeper understanding of the content and student experimentation. One of the ways to help students with inquiry is to provide technology (such as case enclosed tablets) that they can use research topics that are covered in the classroom and to allow them to experience online activities to reinforce those topics. These tablets, enclosed in protective cases, will also be used to help students become engaged by designing science experiments, gathering data during the experiments, and analyzing the outcomes of the experiments.

Besides being essential to the science classroom, using current technologies can help all students engage in learning, leading to motivation to study the sciences more in-depth.

Instilling this love and deep knowledge of science and fluency with technology is one of the most important things today’s teachers can accomplish. Being competent in these areas will help students perform and succeed throughout school, their careers and their personal lives.
