Special, motivated, inspirational, energetic, and endearing are words often used to describe our students. I work with a team of 3 other special education teachers. We work with students with significant disabilities ranging in ages from 6th grade through age 21.
These amazing students are like a family.
They are a special "family" who supports each other in the journey towards adulthood and independence in the community. I hope to graduate each of my students with a broad range of experiences and a strong and supportive group of friends. Many individuals with development disabilities spend their years after high school isolated in their homes; however, given high-quality experiences with friends, I hope to give my students a better chance at continuing to be active members of their community.
My Project
Our students have significant disabilities in the areas of communication, self-management, and daily living. Now that we have switched to a Distance Learning model, the need for students and families to have access to technology has become even more important. Several students rely on visuals and audio-output devices to express needs, feelings and requests. The iPad has become a necessary tool for all special educators as it allows for the use of pictorial images for students to communicate, video models for students to view, and the "tech" motivation for students to stay engaged.
My students and their families are struggling during this time to pay rent and buy food, therefore, funding technology can not be a primary concern at this time.
The students would benefit from this tool greatly and I would be forever thankful for your assistance.
