I am a high school resource teacher (Special Education) in a school of approximately 4,500 students. My school is in the Houston Independent School District. Of the 4,500 students, 500 of our students are Hurricane Katrina students. In teaching high school resource students, I have found out that technology is the best way to not only motivate the students but also prepare them for the future. To aid my teaching, I need a computer so that innovative teaching can occur through technology. In our classroom, a student receives time to do activities that they want to do if they have accomplished what the teacher has asked of them. We are trying to promote interaction among our students during reinforcement time with games, puzzles, books, and computer software. At this time we have limited supplies, and our students have seen them time and time again. New materials will spark their interest and can give our students more common ground with each other.
My students have been able to tape record or video-record themselves in order to view their communication attempts. However, the utilization of audio and video equipment has been halted due to the breakdown of my personal equipment to the point of it no longer being able to be repaired. With time, wear and usage, the equipment has simply worn out. I am requesting funding for the purchase of a dvd player video tapes/discs and all associated equipment so that my students can continue to have available to them the necessary equipment to enhance their knowledge and development. With these materials, my students will once again be able to put a smile on their faces. Thank you for your consideration.
