Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the absolute best. I enjoy my time with each of them and genuinely feel fortunate to do what I do. I am a speech and language pathologist working at a public high school in Long Beach, California.
The majority of my students have challenges in the areas of social skills and executive function and have the diagnosis of Autism.
In addition, I have students who struggle with the complexities of language, who have speech fluency disorders, and those who have significant cognitive impairment. It is a wide range of students and abilities.
My Project
My students have significant deficits in the areas of pragmatic language and social skills. This can have a huge impact on the quality of life one has as you grow, if there is not appropriate intervention. How to tell when someone is joking or being deceitful. How to use humor without hurting or offending someone. Understanding abstract language. Reading facial expressions and tone of voice. These are just a fraction of the topics we cover throughout the year.
Using iPads to watch videos and use applications to address some of these areas has been great for my students over the years.
We use the technology to watch videos that highlight expected and unexpected behavior in social situations, how to identify various facial expressions, and developing our conversation skills. There is an application, Conversation Builder, which helps students observe social interaction, hear tone of voice, and then select the best response to complete an entire conversation. My students love it and they have learned quite a bit that has transferred to real life experiences. My iPads have aged. Having more current technology would really help us this year!
