Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Hispanic community with most of the residents living at or below poverty level. Needless to say, very few of my parents can afford home PCs. Because we have no computers in our Pre-K classroom, I have begged for hands-on computer time from our computer teacher. Of my 40 students, only 20 can use the lab, every other Friday, for a 25 minute session. My kids get so excited on computer day! The problem is, of course, by the time we get all 20 of them logged on, the class is nearly over.
I have only one native English speaker among my 40 students. My job is to improve their English language proficiency while supporting their home language as well. I know there are some excellent software programs on the market that will help facilitate these language skills in a fun and interactive way.
I have begged the state for computers, but they told me that the state program is losing much of its funding. I don't understand the politics, but I do understand that there is no money for me to buy computers for my classroom.
I am asking for a computer for my classroom. If I get it I will purchase the software out of my own pocket. I believe the computer will not only facilitate the acquisition of the English language, it will also positively impact their physical fine motor skills, visual and hand coordination, cognitive and logical problem-solving abilities, and emotional development.
Many poverty level children do not have access to the same resources as their middle-class, same-aged cohorts. I am hoping that we can even the playing field for these bright, but struggling, ESL students by providing them with the same early experiences with computers.
