In a classroom with twenty-six second and third graders, we are always getting excited about our learning, especially when we are learning something new!
My students are still excited to come to school.
They are eager learners and have that spark that makes you want to teach them! Currently, we have 35 computers shared among over 550 students. Our limited access to technology prevents students from accessing audio books, math programs, and state testing prep programs.
With over 75% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch, our students also have limited access to technology at home. Within the school setting, we are limited to one computer lab with computers that are primarily utilized for state testing between March through June. During this time, students' access to computers (research, word processing, interactive supplementary websites, etc.) are put on hold. As a teacher, this kind of hiatus limits forward momentum regarding computer program fluency and student engagement.
My Project
I have requested three iPad mini tablets, headphone splitters, and three Osmo gaming systems so my students can practice their math fluency, and to help them also to become better readers.
I have outlined some activities within subject areas that will utilize these iPads and Osmo Gaming Centers. Students can use these devices as listening centers for story read alouds, engaging in interactive phonics, comprehension, phonemic awareness, fluency and vocabulary activities.
Osmo specifically works with interactive word work practice and math computational fluency, where students can use manipulatives and interact with the interface and live camera feed.
Additionally, students can have continuous access to apps and websites that will better prepare them for state testing. For writing, students can use these devices as self-editing tools for their independent writing projects. By reading their work aloud and recording themselves, students can more effectively and objectively correct work in the 6 Traits of Writing.
The level of engagement increases 100% when the students are asked to work with technology to learn a skill or concept.
