Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Inquisitive and sympathetic are two words I'd use to describe my first graders this year. They ask so many questions and genuinely want the answers. They are trying to sort out their understanding of the world and how they fit in it. With a class of 21 students, that includes 8 English language learners, providing them with all of the answers they want has been a real joy and challenge.
First graders are by nature sympathetic, but this group of children, due to last year's Hurricane Harvey is also very empathetic.
The experience for some of being displaced from their homes, losing treasured items, illness from exposure to mold, or just the fear of forced evacuation, has broadened their global view. When they hear about natural disasters or accidents in general they show a concern that is endearing and speaks about the individuals that they will someday become.
My Project
Chromebooks will make the world more accessible to my children and allow for growth in their educational skills. The Chromebooks and headphones we've requested will allow them to access programs like Lexia, Starfall, ABCya, Renaissance reading and math, Xtramath, and ActivInspire so they can create their own products/projects.
What I'm most excited about though is the chance they'll have to research and learn about the world around them.
The students will have many opportunities to conduct research and create projects to support their learning. And instead of me always providing them with the answers to their questions they can access answers for themselves. One answer always creates another question and with the Chromebooks they'll be on their way.
