Everyday, I see the smiling faces of children who are excited to learn English through speaking, writing, and listening. My students love reading and retelling stories to me, and my heart melts seeing them so excited.
I have 60 students ranging in grades from Kindergarten to eighth grade.
They are from countries all over the world ranging from Dominican Republic, Palestine, Iraq, Cambodia, and Vietnam. My students love reading, laughing, and becoming involved in the books they are reading.
My sixth-grade group just finished Maniac Magee and absolutely loved it and now make self-reflecting connections to the book. As a group we cried for Maniac when Grayson passed and cheered when he went home to the Beale's. My students are my children and I want the best for them.
My Project
I am requesting 7 Kindles for my students to use for reading discussions. The Kindle offers the ability for the students to have access to many more books than even the library has to offer, especially the newer books that capture the students' attention. Kindles have built-in dictionaries to aid the students in understanding words that they are not familiar with. It also has free picture books for the Kindergarten and second graders to read and enjoy independently. Including technology in my groups will get the students even more excited about reading.
Reading is a lost art in today's society, and with the addition of technology in the lives of children, they are reading less.
Kindles bring technology and reading together to help create a society of children who will love and enjoy reading. Reading is an essential skill in learning English, and by increasing the variety of books that are available to my students, I will increase the likelihood of them finding a book that they will enjoy.
