I am a teacher in a Title 1 school in Maryland. The bulk of my students receive free and reduced lunches based on their socioeconomic status. My students are faced daily with challenges inside and outside of our school; many are forced to grow up far too quickly and be the adult in their household.
My students will change the world as long as they always have someone to believe in them.
The students are passionate about learning.
The more I am able to meet the students at their individual level, the more they are able to accomplish in learning while building confidence in themselves. Technology helps to meet their individual needs. Unfortunately, they are not always able to get the differentiation and teaching they need without the use of technology. Many of my students are English Language Learners and technology greatly improves their chance of accessing content by eliminating barriers.
My Project
I currently teach around 130+ mathematics students in a school day. Next school year I will also be teaching students who receive intervention in mathematics.
The Livescribe pen has many functions that aid in learning and differentiation.
The pen allows the teacher to record instruction both visually and auditorily. Notes, messages for feedback, vocabulary, and breaking down mathematics problems can all be handled by the pen. Students can use the pen to speak aloud their written communication in mathematics, which is a great strategy for struggling learners and English Language Learners. Students who are absent or need extra assistance can use the pen as a tool to receive more guidance if I am working with another student when they need immediate help. My instruction using the pen can be shared on our learning platform as a virtual method of instruction. It is a great tool to use during conferences with families since the family is able to hear a recording of their students mathematical thinking.
