This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach second grade in an inner city school. The primary goal in my second grade class is to become college and career ready! That is the purpose we assign to most tasks. However, a lack of supplies and resources sometimes hinder this goal.
My students are inner city second graders.
They do not have much access to technology other than a cell phone. Our computers at school are outdated and in need of constant repair. I want them to be able to use modern technology to keep them ready for all the testing they will have to do in the future
My Project
Students these days are required to be technologically competent. They need to be able to navigate, search, and manipulate the computer, mouse, and web like grown ups. This is never more apparent than when we take standardized test like the "I-Ready". No more are there paper pencil test; standardized test are all computerized.
Many of my student do not have enough exposure to even manipulate a mouse, but they are tested quarterly on technology they are not prepared to use.
This practice is setting them up for failure. Having Chromebooks will allow the children to have access to a several computers with an attached Amazon Mouse. They can practice skills necessary to pass the I-Ready test but extend classroom learning in both math and science through learning centers, websites, and virtual field trips.
