My sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes love to be engaged in the mystery and excitement of hands-on activities. Each day, we learn, discuss, and discover parts of their world that they didn't look at as closely as they do in a science classroom. I encourage students to debate and question the world around them.
This year I have the pleasure of having brilliant young sixth, seventh and eighth-grade scientists.
They love to get their hands messy in science experiments. With every unit of study, their understanding of the world around them sparks engaging discussions and debates of science. Unfortunately, budgets are tight and lab activities and experiments that require ordered materials each year rarely get funded. Every year I am surprised by how weak my students' science vocabulary is. Learning vocabulary is not always enjoyable and I work hard to come up with new and exciting ways to present the material.
My Project
Having Chromebooks in my classroom for student use will allow us to do more research based learning, where students can collaborate on PowerPoint presentations complete virtual science labs, and interact with my Google classroom.
Learning the human body units are always a highlight of the year for students; they love to delve deeper into the inner workings of their bodies.
I have found several virtual dissection labs that would truly give students an in-depth understanding of human anatomy without the controversy of doing in class animal dissections.
Laptops would be incredibly useful in our Earth Science units to track weather conditions in various parts of the country and earthquake activity for our plate tectonics unit.
Headphone splitters will ensure that all students can listen to videos and lab simulations without taking turns, and screen protectors will keep those laptops in good condition for many classes in the future.
