I teach fifth grade English/Language Arts and Social Studies at Marion Intermediate School. The majority of students are from low-income homes and 80% are on free or reduced lunch. In my homeroom class, there are 6 white and 14 African American students, 12 girls and 8 boys. In my afternoon class, there are 18 African American students, 10 girls and 8 boys. My goal with this project is to create a technology-driven, media-savvy Social Studies program. This project will benefit my students by utilizing multiple and creative methods of presentation. With the purchase of an LCD projector, I will be able to use technology such as SC Streamline to show actual footage and reenactments of historical events. I will also be able to present material using Power Point and other computer programs. This will expose students to the Internet and other technology and research tools. The students at Marion Intermediate School have not had the opportunity to use and see technology being used. This will help broaden their technology skills while making learning more exciting.
