Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the proud teacher of 28 of the most perseverant, bright, hard-working students you can imagine. My students are talented, intelligent, creative, and inventive, but many of them don't believe so. They all have dyslexia, which makes their daily school and overall academic life extremely difficult, especially for those with the most severe forms of dyslexia.
While some of the academic tasks like copying from the board, reading the questions on a test, or the instructions in their daily class assignments might be easy for most students, for my students, such tasks are quite challenging.
However, they work hard to keep up with the school work, and never use dyslexia as an excuse to slack off. They are perseverant and determined and put their hearts into everything they do. With some accommodations like help from teacher and peers to read their assignments, books, and tests, they always get their work done. I am often told by classroom teachers how they wish all of their other students had the attitude my students have. What can I say? My students are amazing.
My Project
These iPads will make reading and writing instruction more exciting for my students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Daily reading and writing practice is something that dyslexic and dysgraphic children need to improve their skills, yet, they avoid because the tasks are too challenging and frustrating for them. Children with dysgraphia have severe difficulty just remembering the strokes for a letter. They need daily handwriting practice, which can become quite boring if you don't enhance it with technology to make it more fun. Children with dyslexia will also benefit from practicing reading skills through literacy apps that will make practice that much more exciting.
By donating to our project, you will help my students engage more in the reading and writing practice they need to overcome their difficulties.
It is a well-known fact that a high percentage of children with dyslexia and dysgraphia also have trouble staying focused, especially if the tasks involve reading or writing. As a teacher, I know that it is essential to make my instruction engaging and fun for any student, but it is even more crucial for students who have difficulties such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADD/ADHD. The iPads will allow me to use instructional applications for reading and writing which will motivate my students not only to practice those skills they need to improve but to do it more often and for more extended periods at a time.
