Mrs. Battle from Washington DC is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a listening station to listen to books on tapes, headphones for the computer center, and tablets to access SPED apps.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A typical day consist of working on IEP Goals, Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessments, aliening with the Gen/Ed curriculum. At the end of the year, I want my students to become fluent in expressive and receptive communication. The biggest challenge for my class is to understand abstract concepts.
I teach a self contained autism class.
Although my class is small in size my students are on varying degrees of receptive and expressive communication. I believe if they were more fluent in these areas, they would have ability to learn in an inclusion environment with their non-disabled peers. My school in comprised of students ranging from pre-k3 through 8th grade with 3 self contained autism classroom ranging from pre-k3 thru 5th grade. The school has a wealth of resources to support families like early stages, on site OT, Speech, and Psychologist.
My students will use the tablets to access adaptive skills apps for students with autism; such as apps that will assist with hygiene, multi-step directions, schedules (First/Then), social stories (teaching how to make friends), money, etc... The protective case is needed to ensure the tablets doesn't get damaged. I am also requesting a listening center, because my students have discovered the joy of reading, but they enjoy listening to a book on tap and following along with the reader. As well as headphones for the programs the use on the computer to keep them from distracting the other students who are doing seat work and not at the computer.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom greatly.
The students will have an opportunity to work on the adaptive skills that are not fully supported in the curriculum. Having access to these apps will also improve their social skills which is needed for inclusion with their non-disabled peers. As well as the students can enjoy the listening center simultaneously, with the computer center. Which will overall expand their learning capacity.
