Technology: Changing Learning to Read into Reading to Learn.
My students need the opportunity to use the interactive technology provided with their reading program. Students will have the chance to use this laptop as an interactive board during small group instruction.
100% of my students are considered non proficient in reading, the majority of these students are also from low income families. These students between the ages of 11 and 15,have all the capabilities to be successful, many just lack the motivation and self confidence to meet the potential that they all have.
20 of my students speak no or limited English, the majority are transplants from Puerto Rico due to loosing their homes during hurricane Maria.
I have been given the opportunity to have all of these students in one class in order to meet all of their needs, including giving them a safe space to not only learn English, but be able to ask questions and celebrate every triumph, of which there are many. These students have limited technology experience, several had to be taught to turn on a desktop computer.
All of my students have the ability to be successful, they just need the opportunity to see what they can achieve if they keep getting up, no matter how many things are trying to hold them back.
My Project
Technology is an important part of learning. The jobs my students will seek will more than likely require knowledge in technology. With this touch screen laptop my students will have the chance to use the interactive sections in their reading program during small group rotation. This is where they work with four or five other students on learning reading foundations and building their background knowledge. This technology will give my students the opportunity to explore things they otherwise wouldn't have the chance to.
Moreover, my students are motivated by the use of technology, motivation is the number one thing that holds my students back.
My ESOL students, will be given the opportunity to show off their new skills, while learning from the skills of others.
