Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a continuation high school. All students attending are considered "at-risk" to graduate. They have transferred to this school for credit recovery, making up failed courses, truancy recovery, or to graduate with a 180 credit diploma (220 credits is what is needed for a diploma from a comprehensive high school). 71% of the students are minorities.
Some of the personal challenges these teens face daily are: abuse, parenting, mental illness, poverty, gangs, hunger, addiction, family violence or disruption, foster care, homelessness, and more.
These students come from diverse backgrounds and many of my students have multiple challenges to preserve through. They show up everyday working hard towards graduating, despite all of the challenges they face in and out of school, like starting the day on the city bus and/or riding their bikes across town.
More than 50% of our students participate in the free/reduced-price lunch program. Many students are fighting poverty every day and complain about hunger daily.
Many of them are or were English Language learners and are the first generation in their family to learn English.
My Project
An iPad tablet would allow my students to access and complete virtual labs and view other sources online (that are only accessible through an "App"). Many of the programs and websites I like to use require the downloading of software or applications, which is not possible on the Chromebooks provided. I also do not physically have a "laboratory style" set up in my classroom which makes meeting rigorous the lab requirements very difficult. I am constantly compromising and improvising the experiment and set up to make it work for my students.
Without a complete lab set up and current technological devices, I am NOT able to provide many of the engaging (and required) experiments that are offered in a college prep science class.
Providing those experiments virtually is the next best option - virtual labs could be completed and demoed with an Ipad. Often times, students are more engaged when working online and completing tasks at their own pace. This Ipad would also allow for me to show demos and model biological examples that I could not do in the classroom (ie: watching time lapse video or multiplying bacteria). Having visuals and additional technology to teach the concepts, increases retention and engagement. These students need as many connection and engagement opportunities as possible!
