My Students

Was math hard for you in high school? My students not only have to learn the language of math, they also have learn English.

My students are high schoolers learning English.

Many of my students are recent immigrants and refugees. Some have never had formal schooling or any school in the past. Almost all of my students are behind grade level. They are trying to catch up to their peers in math and science while learning to read, write, speak, and understand English. My students want to learn. They even ask for extra work to take home and practice. Many want to go to college. Our school specializes in teaching English in our content classes. Students have small classes and practice writing in all core classes including math.

My Project

Many of my students have limited math and technology background. Having graphing calculators will allow the abstract to become concrete. They will see what an algebraic equations means. My geometry students will be able to investigate and see the relationship between parallel and perpendicular lines. In addition to learning algebra and geometry from many different angles, my students will be able to learn skills they can transfer to other pieces of technology. Every year we can buy two or three calculators. Until we have a classroom set, students will not have the opportunity for individual learning.

The ability to use technology is vital to competing for jobs and succeeding in college.

These calculators will allow my students to become familiar with technology. They will also learn problem solving and investigative skills.
