Learning to write well is one of the most daunting challenges even bright students face. With the use of technology we can work whole class to improve our style and refine writing across various genres. Timid writers gain confidence by observing others write and hearing how they create their text.
My students are a varied group, including language learners, socially disadvantaged, and many who have a great thirst for improving their school experience with technology.
From the outside, our school looks like the perfect environment for learning, but because we don't have large numbers of socially disadvantaged students, we don't receive funds that many schools do to enrich their academic programs. We have many gifted students, who are great models for others in how to be successful in school. I feel many of our future's bright stars are sitting in my classroom and with a little push can even go further.
My Project
With the use of this computer we can look at good examples of writing, change, edit, and create our own pieces. It will allow students to see the writing process more clearly in action, helping them to feel more confident with their own drafts. Along with the digital projector we can put the draft up for all to see and review as writing takes place. We received the projector through a generous grant from DonorsChoose last school year. This has allowed us to take single copies of books and works of art and view them in a larger format, which is easier for all to see. With a computer we can take samples from the Internet and look at many different types of writing quickly and evaluate it for quality and style. There are so many good examples of writing online, and this will expedite access and streamline our writing instruction.

This computer will push us closer to being on an even playing field with students from schools that don't face this issue. I believe this will make a huge difference in our young writers' confidence. We can make a major difference in the next step of their educational experience if we can create strong writers.
