This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students have a difficult time locating books on their independent reading level within our huge classroom library. By having a laptop available, students can search my database of books according to the level their looking for.
This school year I am teaching 6th grade students.
We are an extremely diverse urban school and have kids coming from neighborhoods all over the city. This year our school is implementing both Reading and Writing Workshops. What an amazing opportunity for my students! Instead of me dictating what students are to read and write every day, they choose what they would like to read and write. This allows children to work at their individual levels in material that interests them. It is amazing to see students excited and invested in their reading and writing!
My Project
Students can sometimes spend the entire reading hour looking for books that they not only want to read, but that are on their independent reading level. I have a computerized database of all books and their levels, however students don't have access to this because we don't have a computer in our classroom. This laptop will allow students to search the entire classroom library, according to their level. In addition to this laptop, I am also requesting some much needed art supplies. These supplies will be used for various art projects throughout the school year.
So much time will be saved if students have access to this database.
It will also give students a sense of control over their reading lives. If they are able to navigate our classroom library and find that "just right" book, they will take ownership of their reading.
