This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school serves an all female population of students from grades 7-12. Our students are bright, inquisitive and resilient in the face of obstacles that are atypical for most children. Motherhood, poverty, violence and neglect are challenges our girls are working to overcome.
We are located in East Los Angeles.
My school aims to help students catch up and get back on course in order to achieve academic and personal success. For some of our students their success will not only impact themselves, but also the live of their young children and babies. Our girls range in age from 12-20 and most have had to live lives full of challenges. We hope to guide our girls towards a path of academic and personal success. Overcoming obstacles that they face is a challenge, but with your help we can make life less thorny for our students.
My Project
Students will use iPads to document, record, film and create projects that will recount their lives up to now and plan for a future that builds on their current success. The objective is for students to recognize that they are empowered to make decisions that can lead to a future that allows for success and global citizenship. iPads are small, portable and easy to be kept discretely when transporting them to and from home. We selected the iPad because it is a piece of technology that the girls are familiar with. Also, in terms of safety, the girls can carry it without garnering unwanted attention. The girls will make film shorts that accompany their projects. They will incorporate all their written, filmed and photographed work into a presentation. Students will think creatively through use of their imagination and self expression in order to problem solve and inspire themselves, each other and their community.
Your donation will empower students who have mostly been on the fringe of access to cultural capital.
It will help me to help students carve a new path that takes them away from at risk behavior and guides them towards productive lives. This on stepping stone on a path back towards access to equity, a better future and self empowerment.
